“pendulled” potions

Aromatherapy

Authentic aromatherapy* is utilizing all natural essential oils into the body by inhalation, or by absorption into the skin. *(The term aromatherapy was coined by a 19th century French chemist, Gattefosse, who researched and promoted the healing aspects of essential oils, after a lab accident burned his hand. Upon immersing his injured hand into neat lavender oil, he found pain relief, no sign of infection, a phenomenal recovery rate and no scarring.)

These all natural essential oils are derived from plant leaves, blossoms, roots, seeds and peels (usually through a slow distillation process).

There are about 200 known essential oils therapeutically helpful to us.

Humans have been using essential oils for thousands of years to heal themselves. The ancient Egyptians used myrrh and cedarwood to mummify their pharaohs. There are hundreds of references in the Bible to prove the longevity of these natural helpers (like recipes mentioned of holy oils to “anoint thyself with” made of hyssop and cassia (cinnamon) and rosemary, etc.; and then, of course, remember the story of the three wise men bringing baby Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh?) In the Middle Ages, perfumers (who worked with essential oils all day) were virtually immune to the dreaded Black Plague because of the oils’ antiseptic qualities. That’s how powerful these oils can be. The resurgence in today’s technological world of “going back to nature” is a key to our good health.

True aromatherapy can help us heal ourselves. Simply put, essential oils “trigger” natural responses in our bodies (i.e. stimulate mental activity, calm nerves, or regulate hormones, etc.). They activate, adapt to, and normalize our own body’s response system and healing energy. By doing this, aromatherapy helps restore balance to our body, mind & spirit so that we can better help ourselves.

BUYER BEWARE! True aromatherapy is NOT just what smells good. Read the labels of so-called ‘aromatherapy’ and make sure the ingredients list essential oils and not just fragrance.

Many fragranced products can not only be un-therapeutic, they can be hurtful to the human body.

Have you ever gotten a headache walking through a department store perfume counter? When we inhale these alcohols and synthetic elements, our brains allow precious oxygen to be utilized by the body to process these unnatural substances, resulting in the brain being deprived of it’s “food” and letting us know it by giving us pain (headache). Alleviate this malady by taking a few deep breaths of fresh air to restore your body’s oxygen level.

Consider enjoying true aromatherapy products; that not only smell good (with beneficial side effects such as reducing wrinkles, or increasing cell regeneration, boosting immunity, or uplifting the spirits, etc), but actually promote oxygen in the body instead of depriving it.

How to use aromatherapy

Some suggestions:

  • Diffuse your favorite oil or blend in a simmering pot of water on the stove to make the whole house sweetly inviting & germ free

  • Put a few drops of lavender onto your pillow before going to sleep to promote rest

  • Put a few drops of cedarwood onto a cotton ball and place in a dresser drawer to repel pests and keep clothing smelling fresh

  • Put a few drops of rosemary into your shampoo or conditioner to stimulate new hair growth

  • Carry peppermint with you when traveling to inhale when nauseous, when encountering unpleasant travel odors, or simply when you need a burst of alertness

  • Spritz lemon oil mixed with water into the air at work to improve concentration and efficiency and to detoxify the air

  • Diffuse sweet orange oil into the air of a playroom to calm children down and encourage happiness

What is “Pendulling“?

Custom personally blended potions can be made by “pendulling” (dowsing). This process involves holding a pendulum over the essential oils, and asking a higher power or your own "inner wisdom" to assist in ascertaining which oils would best work for a particular concoction or for a particular person’s greater good. It’s all about intention, concentration and letting the “powers that be”, not your own ego, do the work. I even “pendull” the number of drops per potion by this method. It’s taken lots of practice, but seems to be quite effective. Interestingly, I’ll ask my husband to check a blend for me, and without knowing the outcome, but concentrating on the intention, he’ll always come within a drop or two of the same blend that I came up with. It’s amazing. Therefore, I trust it with all my potions and can make very personalized oils, blends, salts, etc. for whatever intention someone would want (I.e. improving memory, or reducing fluid retention, inspiring creativity, increasing skin elasticity, or helping to move one through grief issues, etc.)

A custom “pendulled” potion is $15 for the “pendulling” fee, and thereafter materials cost. For example, most custom smelling salts are $5. Four ounce custom lotions tend to be $8 - $15. Choose your own custom blended perfume (with it’s added healing benefits), or make a special gift for someone. Have your own smelling salt concoction on your work desk to inhale whenever you wish. Support yourself in mind, body or spirit in all the little ways you can!

Try your own hand at using a pendulum at the free Introduction to Aromatherapy class held weekly in summer at the lodge, here at CWC.

(not to be used when also taking birth control pills or injections)  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING DR. JOHN LEE, MD BOOKS:  What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause, the Breakthrough Book on Natural Progesterone; and What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Premenopause, Balance your hormones and life from thirty to fifty  2 oz. $18.99

  • Woman in Balance Lotion   Can be applied at any time, anywhere, as much as you want (as opposed to progesterone cream which needs to be measured and applied on more of a schedule).  If you feel a hot flash coming  on, try applying this lotion immediately for instant results.   Your body will only absorb what it needs allowing the rest of the blend to stay on top, which is what you'll smell.  Apply it on a friend at the same time and test each other in 5 minutes for a fun way to test this theory, as all of our bodies are different and need varying amounts of aromatherapy!  This balancing blend helps menopausal and PMS symptoms (i.e. hot flashes, night sweats) by triggering the body's adrenal cortex (which regulates the balance of hormones secreted by other organs).  Promoting waste elimination, it can reduce fluid retention (swelling and breast tenderness).  It's uplifting effect works as a natural anti-depressant, reducing irritability, anxiety, stress and deep seated tension.  Restoring mood equilibrium, it helps slow a racing mind.   Emotionally inspires creativity, intuition and understanding. (Avoid if pregnant as it helps regulate menstrual flow) (essential oils of rose geranium, clary sage, sweet orange & ylang ylang in all natural lotion base) 2 oz $5.99

  • Joint Relief Cream  Stiff fingers? Achy back or sore knees?  Try this powerfully focused blend to help increase circulation and reduce swelling and inflammation.  Absorbed very quickly by our skin, the oils go directly to problem area to help ease discomfort and pain, promoting flexibility.  (essential oils of helicrysum, thyme, petitgrain, nutmeg, ginger, and lavandin in all natural lotion base)  2 oz. $6.99

  • Homemade All Natural Skin Salve  -Comfrey has a coagulant quality:  for example if you were to be cooking a beef stew and threw some comfrey leaves into it, all the little bits of meat would immediately start pulling together and fuse.  That's why this herb has been used for centuries on wounds of any kinds.  The rest of this salve has nutrients for our skin to help speed cell regeneration, and moisturize itchy, dry or inflamed skin. (beeswax, olive oil infused with calendula petals & comfrey leaves, carrot seed, myrrh & patchouli essential oils) 4 oz. $11.99

  • Bath & Massage Oil:  "Walk in the Woods" -this refreshing blend can help reduce cellulite (especially when massaged onto affected area rubbing towards the heart), can help clear congestion and fight infections (especially urinary tract infection), can ease asthma, relieve muscle spasms, speed blemish healing and normalize dry or oily skin. (Avoid if pregnant as it can stimulate menstrual flow) (jojoba, essential oils of cedarwood, balsam, frankincense, juniper berry, birch, sandalwood, geranium & cypress) $14.99

  • Bath & Massage Oil:  "Down Time" -this calming blend can ease nervous anxiety, stress & tension and can help lower blood pressure.   Soothing muscle spasms and boosting circulation, it can also  aid digestion.  Excellent for any skin inflammations or irritations (Avoid if pregnant as it can stimulate menstrual flow) (jojoba, essential oils of chamomile, marjoram, clary sage, coriander, cypress, ylang ylang & juniper berry) $14.99

  • Bath & Massage Oil:  "Woman in Balance"  -this balancing blend helps menopausal and PMS symptoms (i.e. hot flashes, night sweats) by triggering the body's adrenal cortex (which regulates the balance of hormones secreted by other organs).   Promoting waste elimination, it can reduce fluid retention (swelling and breast tenderness).  It's uplifing effect works as a natural antidepreeant, reducing irritability, anxiety, stress and deep seated tension.  Restoring mood equilibrium it helps slow a racing mind.  Emotionally inspires creativity, intuition and understanding.  Avoid if pregnant as it helps regulate menstrual flow) (jojoba, essential oils of rose geranium, clary sage, sweet orange & ylang ylang)  $14.99

  • All Natural Cleaner  -this non-toxic cleaning solution is safe enough to have around curious kids, but strong enough to clean shower residue, mineral build-up, toilets, floors, kitchen stove/oven - even rust on cement!  Anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, and our guests at the resort have commented they love smelling the fresh, clean peppermint scent when checking into our cabins!  The peppermint also gives our cleaning staff more energy and helps boost their immune system while cleaning.  Oh, and ask me about peppermint helping one to lose weight! J  (water, Basic-H, peppermint essential oil) 16 oz quart spray bottles $9.99   Click here to see recipes for making your own natural cleaning products

  • Smelling Salts  -great for traveling, keep one in your pocket for a quick sniff (the salt helps the oils from evaporating as quickly).  I have several next to my computer, as it helps give me a quick break and an excuse for a deep breath of air.  There are also entire books on weight loss and scent, ask me about this if you're interested.   $3.50 each, or 3 for $9.00
